I met up with Marian Buck-Murray at Wellspring to learn a little bit more about EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). I learned from Marian that we needed to target something to be the focus of our session. I naively chose my relationship to work thinking...well that’s not too complicated. Forty minutes, and a handful of tears later, we were talking about my childhood and my mother. Here’s my conversation:

Thanks for taking the time to talk! I think I’ll start with the basics. What is EFT?

Marian: EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques. It's a tapping technique where you use your fingers to tap on specific points on the face, the torso and the hand. The tapping stimulates the acupressure points and helps to reduce cortisol - the major stress hormone.

What actually happens in one of your sessions?

Marian: The way EFT tapping works in a nutshell is to find a target. A target would be something that you think of in the future or something that you're stuck on from the past and you can still feel something about it. Then, once you get to that place and you know, ‘Okay, this is my target. This is what happened. This is how I feel. This is where it is in my body,’ you might actually even get a visual of it.  So then you get to that place and the tapping starts and you start to talk about the target. So, we would go through the points and then it's just assessing, after each round, ‘Okay, notice where it is in your body again. Notice how you're feeling,’ and just go from there. With my clients, we’re tapping into something together, creating these vibrations at specific points in the body while talking about a target issue or memory.  So, it's sort of like you're touching the poison. It’s like stirring things up and releasing toxins so the more that you tap and face them the more they begin to subside.

How did you get started with this technique?

Marian: I was working as a nutrition coach for quite a while. What I was finding with my clients was that it was never just all about the food, right? So, there was always something, and there was always a block about something or something going on. So, at about the same time, I started hearing about EFT  and I went to a couple of courses and I felt like I knew enough to share with my clients to just say, ‘Here, do this, and try it when you have cravings.’ Then, I did a little bit more and I took another class. I thought, ‘You know, I really love this so much that I want to train to become a practitioner’. That's really the way it happened, and then I fell in love with it.

Why does this type of modality work so well for your clients?  

Marian: I have experience myself with body/mind therapy and I knew, from my own experience in helping myself release emotional traumas and everything else, that anything that deals in this way is very effective. It's a tool, it really is, and it has many different blades. It's like a Swiss Army knife with just a lot of different aspects to it. So, it's great.

Marian: Thanks for asking! A space for created self-exploration, where participants are held in the energy of compassion, love, and acceptance.
